Surrendering a cat
We understand there are many reasons necessitating surrender of a beloved pet and recognize what a difficult decision you are facing. HSAR and its representatives harbor no judgment towards any and all surrenders and are here to support you through the process. Please read the following information carefully so we can assist you most appropriately:
-
HSAR is a cat-only rescue; if you are looking to surrender a dog or other domestic species, we recommend contacting Scituate Animal Shelter or Quincy Animal Shelter.
-
A Surrender Request Form must be submitted to HSAR prior to consideration of surrendering any cat. Please see the links below to access this form.
-
HSAR is a small, volunteer-based non-profit organization. We have limited capacity at our rescue to ensure all of our temporary-resident cats receive the attention and care they deserve. Additionally, HSAR receives a high volume of surrender inquiries each day, so we respectfully request your patience while awaiting our response.
-
HSAR does not import or export animals and can only take in/adopt out cats within New England. If you live outside of the New England states, we will be unable to assist you, but can help you find resources in your area should you need help. Please email us at info@hsar.org if this is your situation.

Unsure if Surrendering is the Right Decision?
Please email us at info@hsar.org or call 781-925-3121 to discuss your situation and see what options might be available for your cat. We are always happy to help in whatever way we can! As we receive a high volume of calls and emails each day, patience is appreciated in awaiting our response.
Financial Resources
We understand the current cost of cat daily care and veterinary care is very high and often a reason for surrendering cats. If you are considering surrendering based on limited financial resources, we offer this list of resources to help keep you and your cat together. Please note, HSAR has no affiliation with the organizations listed and cannot attest to their policies or procedures.
